Abstract:
In the late 1980’s Fermilab played a key role in the development of the first proton medical accelerator designed and built to irradiate tumors. In the last 15 years, more than ten thousand patients have been treated with this accelerator at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Southern California. Based on its success and the success at other institutions, the field has grown with many new facilities being built and new commercial vendors supplying “turn key” systems for proton therapy. In this report, we will discuss some of the successes using protons at Loma Linda and then turn to the growing number of facilities and the vendors that supply equipment for them.
