Crystal Collimation at Tevatron

A principle of crystal collimation as it was introduced at SSC in 1991
is described. Detailed modeling has shown that implementation of a silicon
bent crystal into the Tevatron collimation system could substantially
improve its efficiency. Results of first tests of such a system in the machine
are quite encouraging, showing channeling of a 980-GeV proton beam and reduction
of beam loss in the CDF region. A collaboration of Fermilab, CERN, IHEP, INFN,
JINR and PNPI is planning to make a pair of crystals optimized for Tevatron,
characterize them mechanically and optically at Ferrara as well as in beam tests
at CERN SPS, and install one of them in the Tevatron in the coming shutdown.
