The ion source developed for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is a radio frequency, multi-cusp source designed to produce ~ 40 mA of H- with a normalized rms emittance of less than 0.2 pi mm mrad. To date, the source has been utilized in the commissioning of the SNS accelerator and has already demonstrated stable, satisfactory operation at beam currents of 10 - 40 mA with duty-factors of ~0.1% for operational periods of several weeks.
Ultimately, the SNS facility will require beam duty-factors of 6% (1 ms pulse length, 60 Hz repetition rate) so we are currently conducting source lifetime tests at this duty-factor on a dedicated test stand. To date, we have not been able to demonstrate sustained beam currents which meet the full SNS operational requirement of 40 mA or the future SNS power upgrade requirement of 60-100 mA. In order to assure sources will be available which can meet these requirements we are pursuing an aggressive R & D program which revolves around the development of (i) Improved source operating techniques (ii) External antennas (iii) New Cs collars (iv) Improved extraction systems and (v) Helicon plasma generators. This seminar will discuss progress in each of these areas.
