Abstract:
In recent years, the barrier rf systems are being employed in a variety of beam manipulation in hadron accelerators and storage rings. Many new applications have been realized. Out of the six proton synchrotrons at Fermilab, four of them are equipped with multipurpose broad-band barrier rf systems. In the new permanent magnet antiproton storage-ring, the Fermilab Recycler, for example, barrier rf system is used for all of its rf gymnastics. Some of the most interesting applications recently developed include the longitudinal momentum mining, longitudinal phase-space painting, fast bunch compression and barrier bunch coalescing. Here, I will describe the barrier-bucket beam operation techniques used at Fermilab, the new developments with theoretical simulations and experimental demonstrations. Possible future applications of the barrier rf systems are also suggested.
