Phoenix Nuclear Labs (PNL) is developing, in collaboration with Project X scientists at Fermilab, a long lifetime, high current, negative hydrogen ion source based on proven microwave source technology. This effort is being funded by the DoE SBIR program. The goal of the project is to design and build a 10 mA CW H- ion source with multi-month lifetime and RMS normalized emittance less than 0.2 pi-mm-mrad at 30 kV extraction voltage, which would be suitable for injection into the Project X CW RFQ. If these requirements can be simultaneously achieved, multi-month operational cycles may be realized. Low CW discharge power (~1 kW) in the driver chamber, efficient conversion of neutrals (H0) to H-, and an expected low electron to H- ratio would allow for the envisioned long operational cycles. An introduction will be given to PNL and the various DoE and DoD projects it is involved in, and the proposed ion source will be described in detail.
