Abstract:
High Energy Physics has long invested in technology R&D to extend its reach into new realms of energy and sensitivity. The resultant ground-breaking advances in technology have not only extended the limits of knowledge about the nature of universe, but have provided new tools of discovery for other sciences, and have made new medical, industrial, and other applications economically possible. The adaptation of accelerator technology for uses beyond HEP has required translational research conducted in close partnership with the end user. This translational research can be costly, which has resulted in a significant lag in adoption of accelerator technology for new purposes. This in turn has resulted in missed opportunities to expand the reach of other discovery sciences, improve healthcare, develop new material processing methods, mitigate pollution, enhance security, and elsewhere. The HEP Accelerator R&D Stewardship program aims to address these missed opportunities, providing broad impact to both public and private sector accelerator users, and strengthening the HEP program. The founding initiatives and long term goals of the nascent Stewardship program will be described.
