Abstract:
Since the late 70's the Fermilab Linac has accelerated H- ions produced by magnetron ion sources. During the Cockcroft-Walton era the sources had lifetimes that were limited by the power needed for beam currents of 50mA. With the installation of the new RFQ injector and modifications to the magnetron sources, the required power is much less and the beam current in much higher. This talk will cover the history of ion sources at Fermilab along with the recent source development and future plans.
