Abstract:
Although seamless beam tube has been the standard at Fermilab for decades, it has become increasingly difficult to obtain the desired sizes and specifications without adding significant cost. TIG-welded tubing is not acceptable in most applications due to the magnetic permeability at the seam. Laser-welded tubing is a newer technology that may be a suitable alternative based on material properties, price, and availability. Investigative testing was performed using a magnetic flux (rotating coil) probe and a Hall probe. Measurements were compared for all three types (seamless, TIG-welded, and laser-welded), and the results and possible applications will be presented.
