Abstract:
Accelerators developed in the pursuit of science now are important to our economy. Currently there are more than 30,000 accelerators in use, only a tiny fraction of which are research machines. The sales of accelerator systems exceed $2B/yr and accelerator applications touch more than $500B in products each year. Despite widespread use, there are many additional transformational accelerator applications envisioned. In pursuit of our HEP mission FNAL develops & operates high energy, high power (MW), high reliability accelerators and hosts the largest U.S. accelerator complex and the largest staff of accelerator experts in North America. We build accelerators for a living. The Illinois Accelerator Research center will provide an opportunity for Fermilab to have a large impact on future industrial accelerators and applications. In this talk I will describe possible future accelerator applications in the area of Energy and Environment.
