Superconducting RF acceleration has become an enabling technology, opening exciting new frontiers in accelerator-based sciences. Recent SRF system milestones include the hadron accelerator SNS reaching 1.4 MW beam power in June and the electron accelerator CEBAF completing its 12 GeV upgrade and raising CW SRF operation into the regime of 20 MV/m. Several SRF linacs are under construction: European XFEL, FRIB, ESS. , and many more are being planned: PIP-II, LCLS-II, ADS, ILC. This is a time of excitement and high expectation. However, one should never under estimate the intricacy of the SRF technology. This is true in particular for today's and tomorrow's long linacs, involving large number of cavities. In this talk, based on my two-decade working experience in the SRF technology for various SRF machines, I will examine key SRF issues and lessons learnt useful to advance the realization of next generation SRF linacs.
