High-gradient accelerators that surf leptons on light-speed electron-density waves in plasma have recently imparted multi-GeV energy gains to electrons in a single centimeter-scale stage while maintaining high beam quality and ultrashort bunch duration. Staged plasma-based electron acceleration was recently demonstrated, and the principles of designing a plasma-based collider are now being discussed. These unusually tiny accelerators have demanded, and researchers have invented, an innovative class of diagnostics capable of measuring the low-emittance (< 0.1Ï€ mm mrad), ultrashort (~ 1 fs) bunches that they produce, and the evolving, micron-size, transient plasma structures that trap and accelerate them. I will highlight recent plasma-based acceleration results, and survey the beam and plasma structure diagnostics that researchers around the world have invented to characterize them.
