Abstract:
LHC Run 2 started in 2015 with many challenges, now ramping to 6.5TeV beam energy and operating bunch trains with 25ns spacing. A severe damage potential of the high power beam, UFOs, double bunches for beam scrubbing, electron cloud instabilities, RF heating are some of the challenges faced in day to day machine operations, and for the beam instrumentation (BI) systems as well. I try to summarize some of the Run 1 observations and lessons learned, present improvements and new beam diagnostics developments started during the Long Shutdown LS1, and give an update of Run 2 activities, as well as BI challenges ahead of the HL-LHC upgrade.
