A collimation system for the Fermilab Booster to Main Injector transfer line (MI8 line) has been designed and installed. This system will remove particles in the beam halo from 8 GeV Booster beam before it arrives at the Main Injector. A pair of 5 ton collimators, with horizontal and vertical motion, is installed between the gradient magnets in half-cell 836 and an identical system is placed one cell away (about 90o in phase advance) at 838. The static and dynamic thermal response of this system to energy deposited by 8 GeV protons has been calculated to examine peak temperatures and temperatures at thermocouple locations. Results of these calculations will be used to establish temperature limits for device protection. We will explore the possibility of monitoring the integrated beam power lost to the collimators by measurement of the temperature rise integrated over the time of operation.
