Muons are charged particles with mass between those of the electron and proton and can be produced indirectly through pion decay by the interaction of a proton beam with a target. Beams of accelerated muons are of great interest for fundamental high-energy physics research as well as for medical and material science. Unfortunately, the large angle and energy dispersion of the initial beams as well as the short lifetime of muons limits many of their potential applications. Here, we describe an efficient method for manipulating the longitudinal and transverse phase-space of a divergent pion-muon beam to enable the capture and downstream transport of 1014 muons per second with minimum losses. We further discuss the possibility of generating muon beams with unprecedented brightness by means of employing a novel cooling scheme. With the aid of numerical simulations we show that our proposed scheme can reduce the 6D emittance by at least five orders of magnitude. Finally, we discuss main challenges and opportunities for future work.
